Crafting a Black Aesthetic
My degree project is an exploration of how community, culture, gathering and spirituality have always been at the centre of endurance for Black people. It is an acknowledgement of the contributions that Black people have made towards humanity through creativity, literature, style, activism and other forms of expression. It draws inspiration from the Black Arts Movement, a movement that was founded by African American artists and intellectuals in the ’60’s. One of its founders Larry Neal described “Black Aesthetics as the spiritual and cultural sister of Black Power”.
