About Teacher Education Programme in Visual Arts

During the last semester of the five-year Teacher Education Programmes in Visual Arts–Design and Visual Arts–Media, the students conduct a degree project in which they work with both artistic and scientific methods. The results are communicated both in a scholarly thesis and through an artistic work. These two forms of creation and knowledge highlight the breadth of skills and knowledge that the students in the Teacher Education Programme in Visual Arts have developed during their years of study.

At the centre of the investigations is the field of visual arts education and questions about learning. The students’ projects are thus not only about their own learning but also about future generations’ learning surrounding and through images and visual cultures. This is an important task as we find ourselves in a time in which knowledge and understanding of the thoughts and experiences of others are needed more than ever before.

It is striking how the students in the Department of Visual Arts and Sloyd Education show engagement in relevant contemporary issues such as equality, sustainability and educational development. Both source criticism and source trust, visual arts education in a global and glocal perspective, as well as possibilities surrounding formal and informal learning are examples of the topics explored in this spring’s twenty-five degree projects.

The graduating visual arts, media and design teachers have a strong commitment to creating a good education for future generations. They will soon embark on one of society’s most important assignments: being a teacher.

Maria Eriksson and Jacob Kimvall, senior lecturers, Teacher Education Programme in Upper Secondary Education (Visual Arts–Media or Visual Arts–Design), at the Department of Visual Arts and Sloyd Education.

PS. The artistic part of their degree projects is presented in Konstfack´s Degree Exhibition. The scholarly essays are published after the end of the course on the DIVA research platform. You’re very welcome to read them there!
