Every weekend, I go to this café and every weekend I get my coffee in a cup slightly different from all the other ones. The cup has interesting dents on the rim and a mix of glazed and raw ceramic. It comes with a wooden lid with the writing “Remove me to reveal my imperfections”. It’s my favourite cup. I got it one time, then a second and the third, I asked for it.
Every week I see more and more of them. Apparently they are repaired and today, a machine is standing on display. They said my cup got shaped with it.
In professional catering settings where tableware plays a huge role, the disposal of broken ceramic is of great ecological concern. In collaboration with Komet, a café in Stockholm, my degree project explores how to reintegrate chipped tableware that is functional but no longer usable in service.
