Blue Shepherd: Cetacean Stranding Prevention System

Blue Shepherd is an autonomous drone network designed to prevent whale and dolphin strandings before they occur. Using AI-powered real-time monitoring, machine learning predictions, and bioacoustics-based intervention, the system detects at-risk cetaceans and deploys species-specific acoustic devices to gently redirect them away from danger. Unlike traditional rescue efforts that rely on late detection and slow response, Blue Shepherd operates proactively, leveraging 6G connectivity, edge computing, and environmental sensors to analyse cetacean behaviour in real-time. The drones work autonomously but allow scientists to oversee operations through a live interface, ensuring adaptability and ethical intervention. Inspired by research on acoustic deterrents, the system overcomes past limitations by using multiple synchronised devices and tailored signals for different species and scenarios. Blue Shepherd envisions a future where advanced technology supports marine conservation, shifting from reactive rescues to preventative, scalable, and data-driven solutions.
