(Being) My Daughter's Mother

For these past two years, I have been working on these woven sculptures, but for the most part, my life has been about something else.

In my degree project, I have worked through and used my experience of becoming a mother to a child outside the norm, taking the cue from my daughter instead of listening to all the voices dictating what is worthwhile.

These sculptures are made off-loom from patterned double weaves woven on a countermarch loom with a single unit draw system and a shaft draw device. The weaves are felted in the washing machine, stitched together and formed by the structures and the bloom of the woollen fibre.

By fighting that which makes me want to plan, straighten and fix, I have made something unattached from my own ideas of what is productive, beautiful and valuable. The result is a woollen shelter woven imperfectly for the love of my daughter.
