In my thesis, I have chosen to revive and further develop a lamp that my grandfather Henry built in the 1960s. The result is a modular lamp made from leftover materials – wood scraps from Swedish furniture factories and leftover wallpaper from Swedish wallpaper production. The lamp is assembled entirely without nails, screws, or glue, making it easy to assemble and disassemble.
I have focused on a design that offers great flexibility for the user. The lamp comes in three sizes, each of which can be adapted to the user’s needs and taste. By switching out components, the lamp can easily be transformed from a floor lamp to a table lamp or a ceiling lamp.
I have also developed a web service where customers can choose which leftover materials should be used, based on what is available at the factory at the time of ordering. They also select the wallpaper and cord. The lamp is then assembled according to these choices, packaged, and shipped to the customer – a sustainable and personal lamp rooted in a family memory.
