The idea of nyctinasty (from the Greek nyx, night, and nasto’s, compressed) describes the nocturnal movements of plants. Through a visual study of positional changes in the plant body, I explore how the nyctinastic movement pattern can be transferred to typography.
I explore slow, almost imperceptible shifts where letterforms reflect darkness and light, stillness and motion. What do letters look like when they are resting? And are there typefaces that are better suited for the night?
