Liprando Tower: The Balance of Subtraction

For my degree project at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, I chose to work with Torre Liprando, an abandoned tower in the heart of Milan. This project explores the possibility of transforming it into a vertical residence, redefining its identity through the concepts of height, spatial hierarchy, and balance. Over time, the value of the tower’s spaces has shifted; at one time, importance was placed on lower levels, while today, height represents prestige. This project investigates how to revalue lower spaces, using openings, visual perspectives and light to enhance their perception.

Inspired by Jenga, this design experiments by using subtraction as a compositional tool, creating voids and interlocking elements that balance the structure without compromising its stability. The architecture becomes a system in equilibrium, where each element contributes to the dynamic tension between solid and void, past and present, lightness and mass.

A new way of inhabiting verticality.

Filippo Trevisan has studied one year at Konstfack within the framework of the MeDES programme (Master of European Design). This is an explorative project that is not a final degree project but that leads to the completion of the MEDes programme. More information at www.masterofeuropeandesign.com
