The Urban Secateur: A Tool for Growth and Well-Being
In my early exploration of the subject, I chose scissors as a symbol of separation, an act that can be both destructive and nurturing. This contrast is especially evident in pruning, where removing dead or unwanted parts encourages growth, fertility, and overall plant health.
My degree project bridges the practicality of gardening with the therapeutic benefits of pruning, offering a mindful solution for homes where greenery is often limited. The Urban Secateur is not just a tool but a means of connection, between people, nature, and personal well-being. Engaging with plants through pruning fosters mindfulness, purpose and renewal, providing a meditative escape from busy lives. It also helps users become more comfortable with plant care, even if they are unfamiliar or hesitant.
At its core, this degree project explores the balance between separation and growth. It serves as a reminder that letting go—whether in nature or in life—is sometimes necessary to thrive.
