Space to 'be'

My degree project explores how we can move beyond merely using nature, and instead move towards designing in collaboration with it.

The tree is not a passive element but an active partner in shaping a flexible, adaptable space within small urban green areas. This furniture piece responds to visitors’ needs. It can function as a seat, a table, a gathering point, or simply as a place to just be. It supports both social interactions and quiet moments, offering an open, non-commercial alternative for people to meet, pause, and connect in nature.

At the same time, it provides a framework for experiencing Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES), the ways nature enhances well-being, social connections, and everyday routines. By integrating the tree as a structural element, the design highlights the interdependence between humans and their environment, making nature not just a backdrop but an essential part of urban life.

Raphael Morsi has studied one year at Konstfack within the framework of the MeDES programme (Master of European Design). This is an explorative project that is not a final degree project but that leads to the completion of the MEDes programme. More information at www.masterofeuropeandesign.com
