SOILMATE - an Open Source Tool to Support Small-scale Agriculture

SOILMATE is a modular, multifunctional trolley designed to support small-scale agriculture and primary production both in Sweden and globally. With adaptable features such as adjustable height and wheel width, it is also designed with the ability to mount a variety of tools, making it flexible for diverse farming tasks.

The development of the design is based on practical farm work, shaped by interviews and intercultural exchanges with small-scale farmers across Europe, Nepal, Colombia and Mexico, and aims to improve the working conditions, ergonomics, and accessibility for agricultural workers.

Built on open source principles, SOILMATE invites farmers, makers and communities to freely access, adapt, and improve the design. Technical drawings and building instructions are shared openly, encouraging a culture of collective learning and innovation. By using this approach, SOILMATE supports the reappropriation of traditional knowledge and the application of modern know-how, fostering technical autonomy and reinforcing the sovereignty of small-scale producers.

By merging practical functionality with collaborative development, SOILMATE takes part in a broader movement towards a more resilient, self-determined and just agricultural system.
