Ljubomir Popović

My work is surrounded by the “in-betweenship” of urban life. I search for materials from spaces that manifest the latest phases of urban change; protective elements, with vibrant colours, as an intersection of efficiency and function. I find objects among infrastructure and construction sites and this material is collected. By taking the material out of its original context, it becomes, as I see it, an archaeological object that bears the social relations of urban change. These relations are created by political processes, some of which we recognise as gentrification or decay. When the material is recreated, it constitutes an interruption in these processes. As part of an installation, it can reveal the ideology within which it operates. In this way, we witness what is happening in the urban processes. Through my artistic practice, I promote new forms of spatial awareness, resistance and cultural preservation.
