Beneath the Surface

Jodie De Verney finds inspiration in the traces of buried and abandoned places. For her, the flea market becomes a site of exploration, a space where new knowledge is uncovered. It is a gathering place for remnants of the past. Her search for antiques is guided by intuition and the possibility of unexpected encounters. The essence of her work lies on the threshold between the familiar and the unfamiliar, navigating through emotions of grief, memory and identity, all of which speak to our collective longing for self. Using repetitive techniques, De Verney deconstructs found objects to capture absence. This process creates a dialogue in which fragmented objects are reintegrated into our social structure. Using photographic methods, she reveals the material and questions its functional role. She unfolds a narrative that creates an intimate space – an awareness of herself in relation to other beings.
