Yu Hong Qiao – Jade Rainbow Bridge is the place my popo, my maternal grandmother, comes from. This is the place that she only told us about for the first time during the summer of 2024. It is the place where there was a stone bridge built to celebrate newly wedded couples in the village. It is also the place I would now like to invite you into, somewhere between the hand, the cloth and the needle.
In my degree project, I have researched, explored and dissected the symbols and ornaments often used in embroidery from my regional cultural backgrounds, Guang Zhou (China) and Skaraborg (Sweden). I have woven these inspirations into my work to tell personal stories about home, identity and belonging.
In the exhibition, we celebrate folk art and intersectionality through collective embroidery workshops and karaoke performances. Let’s meet there, on the stone bridge, between the woven threads, inside the eye of the needle.
