About Spatial Design

In the Master’s programme in Spatial Design, the field of interior architecture and furniture design is challenged and expanded to address many of the issues facing society today. In the degree projects, the students move between vastly diverse scales and contexts, and they approach problems with exploratory, experimental and critical methods.

This year’s graduating students in Spatial Design create spaces for community and play, in a time of unrest and external crises. The students do not shy away from working in complex contexts, often characterised by conflicting interests. Through workshops and processes for co-creation, they engage in local contexts, frequently outside metropolitan areas. They develop proposals for courts, for therapy rooms, for grief processing and for areas marked by conflict.

The spatial experience is central in many of the projects. Light and colour reflections are investigated in models, while interior elements are examined in relation to the body through full-scale installations. Many degree projects position themselves in expanded time perspectives, and the students work with reuse and recycling, with material flows, with the origins of environments and with their possible futures. The students work in workshops with artisanal methods, and they develop new materials and materialities. They highlight the forgotten histories from the archives, and they look far into the future.

The class of 2025 is characterised by great curiosity, and the students convincingly demonstrate the potential of spatial design in the transition to a more sustainable and inclusive society.
